In the wake of the Abramoff and Foley scandals, the Democrats effectively exploited the GOP corruption issue in the last election with their promise to “clean house.” Nancy Pelosi led the charge on the issue, and Big Media parroted her line. There is no doubt it cost the Republican Party support. But even before Pelosi takes charge, there is already a big gap between her corruption rhetoric and reality. Speaker-to-be Pelosi is twisting arms all over Capitol Hill to get Rep. John Murtha (D-PA) chosen as House majority leader. Murtha, of course, has been a favorite of the far Left ever since he came out against our efforts in Iraq. But did you know that Murtha is also an “un-indicted co-conspirator” in the “ABSCAM” bribery scandal of 1980? He was caught on videotape pondering whether to accept a $50,000 bribe from men he thought were Arab sheiks trying to enter America illegally. The “sheiks” were actually FBI agents. The transcripts of the conversation between Murtha and the undercover FBI agents paint a staggering portrait of corruption, but that hasn’t stopped Pelosi from demanding House Democrats vote her way. So much for cleaning up Washington, D.C! A December Surprise And speaking of corruption, are we about to see more of it exposed? ABC News has reported that Jack Abramoff, who is beginning his six-year jail term, has provided information to federal investigators that could implicate “six to eight seriously corrupt Democratic Senators.” (In fact, there are reports one may be Harry Reid.) True, Abramoff is a Republican, as we were constantly reminded of by Big Media, but his questionable activities on Capitol Hill were bi-partisan. Stay tuned. A Bad Start Florida Senator Mel Martinez, President Bush’s choice to become chairman of the Republican National Committee, got off to a bad start yesterday by suggesting Republicans’ tough stance on immigration caused their defeats last Tuesday. Speaking to reporters, Senator Martinez said, “I think we have to understand that the election did speak to one issue, and that was that—it’s not about bashing people, it’s about presenting a hopeful face. …Border security only, enforcement only, harshness only is not the message that I believe America wants to convey.” With all due respect to Senator Martinez, he needs to sit down with conservatives, who would tell him that it was the lack of action on immigration—and the perception that Congress only addressed the issue in the closing weeks of the campaign as a way to secure conservative votes—that had many voters discouraged on Election Day. I wonder how Martinez would explain the countless democrats who prevailed by taking tough stances on immigration and against amnesty? How would he explain the exit polls, which revealed that only 1 in 3 Republican voters felt illegal immigrants should be given amnesty? A number of national Republican committeemen and women have expressed skepticism about Martinez’s comments, and Indiana Representative Mike Pence, who is running for House minority leader, has announced his opposition to Bush’s immigration plan, saying, “What is coming at us now is going to be a massive amnesty bill that will likely be propounded not only by Democrats in the House and Senate, but frankly also by the White House.” If last week’s elections revealed anything it was that Republicans lost because their party strayed too far from its core principles. The GOP has two years to prove to voters that it still stands for conservative values; but, with the White House and the new party leader siding with the likes of Ted Kennedy—and against their base—on the critical issue of immigration, Republicans are not off to a promising start. Media Notice I will be appearing on Your World with Neil Cavuto on the Fox News channel today at 4:20 PM EST. Neil and I will discuss the San Francisco School Board’s decision to kick the JROTC off all its campuses because of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on homosexuals. We will also discuss how Speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi’s backing of John Murtha for House majority leader will affect our country in the struggle against terrorism. * * * * * If you are interested in receiving Mr. Bauer's daily report by e-mail, please call 703-671-9700, visit SIGN UP FOR GARY BAUER'S "END OF DAY REPORT" or simply send a reply e-mail titled "Subscribe" and include your name and address.
